FAQ&A button FAQ: How does Ovantex® compare to other industry-standard materials?

&A: Ovantex®, only from Oliver, fills the gap between paper and Tyvek® by providing exceptional sterile barrier properties and strength in a synthetic fiber-based substrate.

FAQ: What is Ovantex® made of?

&A: Ovantex/F is an adhesive-coated medical grade packaging material comprised of a blend of synthetic fibers and cellulose-based components. Oliver's Xhale™ adhesive is a non-toxic hot melt heat-sealable adhesive coating applied in a uniform dot pattern to maintain breathability.

FAQ: How do Ovantex® barrier properties compare to those of industry-standard materials?

&A: Medical packaging substrates must provide an adequate microbial barrier in order to ensure integrity of the sterile barrier system from point of sterilization to point of use.

Evaluation of the microbial barrier properties of porous materials is typically conducted by challenging samples with an aerosol of bacterial spores under a set of test conditions. Using test method ASTM F1608, Ovantex demonstrates a microbial barrier superior to medical-grade papers and comparable to 1.76 oz/yd2 spun-bonded olefin.

Ovantex also meets EN868-6 requirements for use in sterile packaging; the EN868-6 test measures the pressure required to force air bubbles through the interstices of the wetted material and uses the pressure, together with the liquid's surface tension, to estimate material pore size.

** Previous literature stated value of 3.2, increased value of 3.6 is based on additional testing of multiple lots.

FAQ: Why is thickness consistency an important consideration when choosing a material?

&A: Thickness consistency impacts bacterial barrier, porosity, strength, and durability. Thickness inconsistency can lead to uncontrollable variation in the sealing process. Ovantex provides greater consistency than other substrates commonly used for medical packaging.

FAQ: How does the tear strength of Ovantex® compare to other industry-standard materials?

&A: A measurement of tear strength is one way to determine a packaging material's ability to protect the product and maintain a sterile barrier when exposed to distribution hazards. Based on the Elmendorf Tear Strength Test (ASTM D1424), Ovantex provides tear strength that fills the gap between spun-bonded olefin and paper.
